When Darkness Tries to Stop You but Can’t
Every believer who has ever stepped out to do God’s will has faced opposition. It’s not a sign that you’re failing — it’s proof that you’re moving in the right direction. But here’s the truth Scripture makes clear: darkness does not have the power to overcome the light.
John 1:5 says, “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
The word “comprehended” comes from the Greek katalambanō — a combination of kata (to dominate or suppress) and lambanō (to seize or take hold of). Together, it paints a vivid picture:
darkness does not have the ability to seize, suppress, or overpower the light.
Darkness may try. It may push. It may resist.
But it cannot win.
God’s light always prevails — even in the darkest moments.
And because you are a child of the light (Ephesians 5:8), darkness cannot put out your light either.
You Were Born to Overcome
1 John 5:4 declares, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world…”
The word “overcometh” is the Greek nikos — the same root for “victory.” It describes an athlete who enters the arena, faces real competition, and ultimately emerges as the champion.
This is important to understand:
Walking by faith doesn’t remove you from the fight — it places you in the center of it. Faith puts you directly opposite the enemy’s resistance. He hates your faith because he knows what it can do.
He may swing hard. He may knock you down.
But he cannot keep you down.
Paul said it best: “Cast down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:9).
One translation puts it this way:
“We may get knocked down, but we never get knocked out.”
Why?
Because those who are born of God carry a supernatural ability to rise again — every time.
You Are Equipped to Win
The enemy may use circumstances, pressure, or the world around you to fight against your calling. But 1 John 5:4 says your faith overcomes the world — meaning:
Your faith overrides circumstances
Your faith outlasts pressure
Your faith outshines darkness
Your faith breaks through resistance
The devil may be called the “god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4), but he is not God over you.
You carry a weapon — faith — that defeats him every time he shows up uninvited.
John 1:5 makes it clear:
darkness cannot hold back the light.
It may delay it.
It may resist it.
But it cannot stop it.
Your Calling Will Break Through
The same is true for your dream, your vision, and your God‑given assignment. You may feel hindered at times, but those hindrances are temporary. The only way the enemy can steal your calling is if you surrender it.
If you refuse to quit, your faith will overcome every obstacle placed in your path.
MY PRAYER FOR TODAY
Lord, I thank You that darkness has no power to overcome me. It may try, but Your Word declares that darkness cannot overpower the light. I am Your child, and I live on the winning side of the cross. When discouragement comes, remind me that in Jesus, we win. I pray this in Jesus’ name.
MY CONFESSION FOR TODAY
I declare that even if I get knocked down, I will never be knocked out. I carry the supernatural ability to rise again because I am born of God. My faith overcomes the world and every challenge the enemy brings. No circumstance, event, or attack can defeat me because my victory is in Jesus’ name.
